In brief: For UK funding research, separate where you live, where the project takes place and who is applying. A UK-based funder may not accept every UK applicant, and a publisher-facing call is not automatically an author grant.
Record the exact geographic rule
Check whether the call refers to the whole UK, one nation, a local area or a project’s public benefit. Record the language used by the funder rather than reducing every rule to ‘UK’. Ask about recent moves or cross-border collaborations when the guidance does not cover them.
Choose the right applicant
An individual author, translator, publisher and literary organization are not interchangeable. Establish who will hold the award, sign the agreement and deliver the work. Avoid spending time on an individual application to a program intended for publishing companies.
Make the delivery plan readable
Describe the creative output and the work required to reach it. Keep collaborator responsibilities, sample preparation and public activities distinct. Save a personal target date before the official deadline so you have time to check attachments and the application portal.
Before you apply
- Check nation, residency and project-location rules
- Confirm individual or organization eligibility
- Agree on collaborator responsibilities
- Prepare the exact sample and supporting documents requested
Common question
Can an author apply directly to every UK publishing grant?
No. Check the named applicant category. For example, English PEN’s PEN Translates is a publisher-facing translation program, not a general author grant. Other programs have their own rules.
Try a funding decision
Hypothetical example. No score is saved and this is not an eligibility check.
Apply this to your own project
Record who applies, who delivers the project and the exact location condition. Identify a better-fitting call if the applicant requirement does not match.
Use your own notes, or open a grant and save a private application plan. Saving a plan does not submit it.
